A beautiful day at the cemetery.

MC and I went driving today to practice for her drivers test.    So you all get to view some cemetery pics.  (If you are new here and unsure why I teach my kids to drive in a cemetery, please click here.)  Here’s some interesting pics from todays  near death experience   lesson.maviefolle-344maviefolle-348      maviefolle-352
The first pic makes me sad and happy at the same time.  The second is a shot of the ‘baby section’.  (We pay our respects to the babies when we visit, because they are so often forgotten) This is a large section, going back to the little building behind the trees on the left.  Many died of influenza in the early 1900′s.

MUTTER. ? Does anyone know if this means ‘mother’ in a different language?

Okay and this picture?  Well, MC was asking the other day, “How does it work when a man and woman are married for a long time and one dies and the other gets remarried?   What happens when they all die?”

Well, um, this is what happens.  lol.  (These are relatives).  Huh, talk about a big family rift????  George and Betty were married happily.  Betty passed.  Esther then married George.   Esther was shunned by George’s family.   In the end…Esther got the last word.

And here are a couple shots of beautiful monuments.  I almost had to lay on the ground to get the first shot…but I thought better of laying on the ground in a cemetery.  I almost had to lay on the ground to get this in the frame. (But I don't lay on the ground in cemeteries!) maviefolle-346

Cemeteries: My weird hobby

Yeah, so I like cemeteries.  I admit it.

“Hello, my name is Sheila, and I am a Taphophile”

I wonder if this is where, when I walk through the cemetery gates everyone yells “Sheila!” like in Cheers.   Hmmmmm, I hope not, considering most people in the cemetery are pretty much dead.

The kids and I went out ‘cemetery hopping’ yesterday.  We visited my grandmothers’ ancestors and all their ‘new neighbors’.  Anyhow, something about poking around in cemeteries exhilarates me.  It all started when I did the family genealogy for Shane’s side and started mine.  Then I was hooked.  I have far too many pics of my kids as toddlers posing with headstones.  Yeah, I know, strange.  frickin creepy.

There’s just something about visiting those once forgotten.  To wonder about their lives and who they were.  We always make a point to stop and visit the graves of the little ones.  The babies.  Every cemetery has a slew of children who died in 1917/18 from influenza.  I imagine the pain of the young mothers who lost their child.  In some cases, children.  It always chokes me up.   (continue to pics ~ Continue reading

Shop until you drop?

Looks like an ordinary shopping center but look closely, it’s built around an old cemetery!

Built nearly two centuries ago, this little grave yard went almost unnoticed during the last 100 years in the city of Middleburg Hts., OH.   But in 1995, commercial development of the area ‘re-discovered’ the family plots that hold the remains of two families.

The Hickcox family came to the area in 1809 and were the first white settlers of this area. Rachel Hickcox Fowles gave birth to the first pioneer child born in the area. The other family is the Hepburn family, who’s graves are (atleast now) unmarked.

The plot now known as Hickcox Park or Meditation Hill sits on the original hill in the middle of the shopping centers parking lot. The shopping center had to be built around the cemetery which is now nicely fenced in and properly maintained.

The large pillars seen inside the cemetery (dark sandstone) are the original pillars that marked the large plot.

More history on this here.

I’d like to thank Alyson for re-sparking my interest in lurking around cemeteries!
I visited her blog for the first time and to my surprise found a great article on Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.  So I’ve got the ‘bug’ again and rekindled my passion for the stones!  My kids who pretty much grew up visiting cemeteries in my genealogy days loved this little ‘jaunt’ and are excited about grave hunting again.  (The weirdness is genetic)
