Senior Pic Sticker Shock!

Now any parent who has a senior is in for sticker shock when they see the package prices for photos.  You would think that these kids were modeling for a million dollar contract or something with the way these studios try and suck you in.  They take shots outside at any location as well as inside.  You can even invite friends to be in your poses (so the place can then suck them into their web)   Over $800 for 4 poses and a small package of photos?  I think not.

Gone are the days when I graduated and you picked from 2 poses (all indoor shots).  Your mom bought way more than she needed and somewhere tucked away in a box in the basement you still have a pack of wallet photos from 25 years ago that were never used.

Now they pose by trees and waterfalls, with their dogs and friends, in cut off skirts and t-shirts or fancy dresses.   I even saw a sample shot of a girl wearing a fancy smanchy dress lying ½ in a stream of water, soaking wet.    I can’t imagine paying $800 for a picture of my kid in a now ruined dress, soaking wet.  I don’t get it.  If I came home and asked my mom to let me get that pose, she would have quickly turned on the sprinkler and started taking her own pictures!

Anyhow, we googled local photog’s and found a very reasonable one!  Crystal Clear Photographyin Brunswick, OH.  Very nice people, very professional and informed in their craft.  Unlimited clothing changes, 2 hrs of session time and (here’s the best part) we can pick any poses and any select what we want ala cart for about 1/3 of the price of the ‘other’ photog’s!

A week before the big shoot, lo and behold, Kaylee’s nose piercing gets infected.  Big & blazing.  As her Irish luck would have it, the piercing did, in fact, contain nickel!  So for future reference….surgical stainless steel contains between 8-12% nickel.

But luckily she took this set back in stride simply stating “Thank God they do retouching on those photos!”

We ended up contacting a jewelry place in Oregon on the internet that sells quality body piercing jewelry.  The people there really know what they are talking about and the jewelry is very nice.  The place is called NitrousBody

Nose Piercing

Yeah, so it wasn’t that long after the tattoo ‘business’ that Kaylee ‘needed’ a nose piercing.  “Just a little teeny one Mom”.  At this point I just throw my hands in the air and say, “You can wait til you are 18 for this one.  We did the tattoo thing, but if you’re going to want to put another hole in your head, you can do it when you’re old enough”.

So a few weeks later I had to take her to the dentist to get her teeth cleaned for senior pictures.  I had a horrible sinus headache.  My whole head ached.  As it turned out, All Tattoos (where they also conveniently do piercing!) is right down the street from the dentist office!  Wow!  Imagine our luck!

With a raging head ache I was in no mood to delay the inevitable and we pulled in the parking lot.  This time I got to sign the consent form.  Now Kaylee is allergic to nickel so I had to make sure that there was no nickel in the piercing.  After talking with two employees there I was assured they only used surgical stainless steel which doesn’t contain nickel.  So great!  Everything was panning out nicely for this adventure.  Her nose got pierced with a tiny little sparkly stud and we went home.  It bled a lot at first but then slowed down.  She asked how it looked.  Studying the new addition to her beautiful face I said….”Well, with the blood around the stone it sorta looks like a zit!”
Not impressed with my humor but still elated that she had ‘won’ and got the piercing, we went home.
