Conversations with a 16 yr old.
filed in Raising Teenagers on Feb.06, 2009
Middle Child got her first paycheck a couple weeks ago. Although she saved 3/4 of it in her brand new bank account….she did keep a little money for spending. She’s very proud of the fact that she’s old enough to earn her own money.
MOM: “So now that you are like…growing up and working and all that…what are you going to spend your first check on?”
MC: “Oh! The Little Mermaid DVD! That movie is going back ‘in the vault’ so can you take me up to KMart to get it?”
************************
The other day during our snow storm, everyone took turns shoveling (the entire day) to keep up with the snowfall. Everyone except Middle Child. (It was too ‘cold’ ) So about 7pm, I said, “That’s it! Put your coat on and get out there and pull your weight!” And with much stomping and sighing and slamming, she went out and shoveled about 1/8 of the drive. The next day she was complaining that I made her go out there.
MOM: “You were out there for like 10 minutes.”
MC: “I was out there for like THIRTY minutes!”
MOM: “How could you have been out there for 30 minutes and only shovel that little tiny area? ”
MC: “Oh…I just kept shoveling the same spots over and over. I wanted to stay out there as long as I could so when I got like…sick with pneumonia…or like… died….you’d feel reaaaallly bad!”
**************************
MC: “Working…is so stupid when I have to work at 5:30 in the morning on a weekend! I mean…the whole reason I even have a job is to get money so that I can do stuff on the weekends. And they schedule me so early on the weekends that now I’m to tired to actually go out and have fun !!!!”
MOM: “Welcome to the ’real world’”
MC: “Well the real world sucks!”

So funny. She sounds like she speaks like my 20 year-old niece did only a couple of years ago. Sadly, my niece was never told to work my my sister and BIL until they lost everything in Hurricane Ike. She is just now having these sorts of work related talks with my sis and BIL at the age of 20.

If she only knew how easy life is right now. You’re never content at that age…at least I never was. Love that she is still into the Little Mermaid. That is one of our favorite movies.

The Real World, yeah. But a bank account is a very good thing! I remember my first paycheck when I was 17, I bought some lavendar balloon pants and lavendar Keds.
