Lord help me. (New driver in the family)
filed in Teen Driving on Nov.12, 2008
So after we spent 2 hours with every one on earth and their brother at the BMV, Middle Child finally got her turn to take the written test and passed it, thus earning her temporary drivers permit. Yea!?!?
On the way home I said we’d stop at the cemetery to practice her driving. She’s all like “What? I don’t want to drive !”
Me: “What do you mean you don’t want to drive ? What, did you just want the permit with your picture on it?”
Her: “Well (smirky smile)….yeah. I mean…I don’t know, I don’t want to actually drive. Not like ‘right now’. I’m afraid.
Me: “okay, yeah, uh…you know this permit doesn’t last forever, you’re learning and we’re starting now.”
So here’s a little video of her very first actual driving experience. (Btw, the annoying clicking sound is my large keychain banging around) It’s not spectacular, but a great example of how the first time usually goes:
As it turns out, she loved it (although every squirrel in the cemetery now is taking heart medication).
actual pics of cemetery itself are in below post ~also filed under Category: Cemeteries!

OMG i love that you video tapped this! She’s so cute!! “But I’m scared! I have fear! What do I do?”
I remember feeling that exact way the first time I ever drove. I thought for sure I’d crash and kill us all.
LOVE IT.

She seems to be doing just fine. I’m sure constant practice will help improve her driving.

Good grief! I am transported back a decade! [a bit more than that actually] The difference for me was that we’d only been in the States a year and in England you don’t get your ‘provisional / learner’ license until you’re 17. Talk about psychological damage.
Then of course we had a stick shift, so she had to learn in that.
I am deeply impressed that you took her to a cemetery to practice – lots of psychological fall out from that choice, but strangely scenic!
Well done both. This week 5 mph, next week 60!
Cheers

Oh Lord! That will be me in a couple of years and I am soooo not looking forward to that. She did pretty well overall though. And you totally blogged about her. That part with her wanting to punch it cracked me up. Kids.

That’s so awesome! I wish my mom would have recorded my first time driving. I was like her too. I didn’t want to actually DRIVE, just look cute with a picture permit.

AHHHHH!!!!!
My first time driving licensed was with my Mother. She is a freaking worry wart. I was driving 25 miles an hour down our street and she was screaming at me because I was going “too fast” and she was hanging on to the “oh Sh*t” bar like I was trying to kill her. Ironically, my driving has always been very good…and my Mother’s driving…well, it’s not so good. I don’t let her drive anywhere.

How funny Sara, do we have the same mother? LOL

I came back to thank you for your comment on my blog regarding the teacher incident. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts about what happened. I really appreciate it. I talked to the teacher once again today. She was very apologetic. She expressed how sad she was for losing my trust. I accepted her apology and even initiated a hand shake as a sign that everything has been settled.

This is such a cute video! Today your car, tomorrow an 18-wheeler perhaps? lol
I love that you took her to practice driving in the cemetery. I mean, even if she did get a little out of hand or freaked out, it’s not like she’s going to KILL anyone. LOL

You should definitely be grateful that she was reluctant. That means she’s careful. Some teenagers could care less if they’re being safe or not. Smart girl!
