So, some of you may know I took a little ‘by myself vacation’ last month…an overnight stay in the hospital for what my doc thought was appendicitis.  Turns out it was a kidney infection.

It wasn’t a very fun ‘vacation’….mostly spent puking my guts out.  I was only there overnight so they could pump me with IV antibiotics.

Today I got the bill.   I almost had a heart attack.    $6,076.75.    Are you kidding me?  Six thousand bucks and I didn’t even get a Mai Tai!  The only tour I got to take on this ‘trip’ was down the hall to the CT machine.

I wonder if they’ll give me a discount for the 7am wake up call when the big giant noisy floor cleaning machine slowly made its way up…and down…and up the hall.  (Who the hell cleans a floor at 7am?)

The point of this post is that I can always remember my mother drilling it into my head….”Never, ever go without health insurance!”  Luckily we’ve always managed to keep that up.  The insurance company ‘negotiated’ the charges down to $1020.06.  (Which applies to my $5000 …..yes 5 Thousand…deductible.)

I cannot imagine how people with no health insurance do it.  Talk about being screwed in a major way.  The dilemma for most people is the cost.  We recently switched companies and REDUCED our payment to the still ridiculous rate of $425. a month.

Most families today are faced with paying outrageous insurance or using that $$ to buy groceries.  When I get to that point I’ll do the same thing….feed my family and hope to God no one gets seriously sick.

Isn’t there something wrong with this picture?
