F*’D up Friday #2 With Liberty and Justice for all. Or some.

I started F*’d up Fridays as a way to vent some frustration. It’s simple, if there’s something you think is F*’d up then write a post and link your post to the below Mr. Linky.

My F*’d up Friday this week:

This is going to be a long post.  It’s going to  talk about Prop 8, religion, and our government.  Either get a cup of coffee now or just pass this post over.  Some people may get mad, but I don’t care, it’s my blog.  And maybe if everyone just tried to actually understand the issues, there wouldn’t be such a problem.

I’ve read many blogs in the last week talking about Prop 8 in California and would like to weigh in with my two cents.  I think it’s a disgrace how gay people are treated in this country.  Was America not formed to embrace all people?  Our founding fathers fought long and hard for equality.  For all.

Marriage itself is not mentioned in the U.S. Constitution.  States have their own rules/laws governing marriage.  There are Civil Unions and Marriages.  Marriages are basically religious, civil unions are secular.  The problem becomes that a marriage legally provides more rights to the couple then a civil union, except for example, in Vermont. Various Ethnic Traditions and Holidays

One of my goals in life is to learn about all the different holidays, traditions and beliefs of different religions, cultures and ethnicity’s.  The world is so diverse and intriguing.  I have a very open mind, which is evident in my book shelf.  lol.

I encourage my children to explore whatever interests them.  Tolerance in the world is so crucial, so my theroy is that the more they learn and understand (no matter what their personal belief may be), they will always be able to understand and relate to the world at large.

Just the other day I learned about Rosh Hashanah.  Not being Jewish myself, I had no clue.  You hear about different holidays all the time in passing….’congress is taking off to celebrate Rosh Hashanah’ for example.  When the kids ask…’what is Rosh Hashanah’, I don’t want to say…’Oh, um, I think it’s a Jewish holiday or something’, I want to be able to at least give them some idea of what it is, or at least point them to an avenue that will do so.

As it turns out Rosh Hashanah is like our New Year.  Only without the drunken stupor and football games. A time for introspection and reflection.  Bread or apples are dipped in honey for wishes of a sweet new year.  There is also the practice of ‘casting off’ ~ to walk to flowing water and empty their pockets (casting off sins).   That was just a sample.

So I’m wondering if anyone would be willing to share their own practices, traditions, holidays.   You can either post it to your blog and leave comment below (make sure you put a link IN the comment for easy navigation)….or….you can post a comment below with your thoughts.

Can’t we all just get along?

Okay, I know I’m gonna ‘hear it’ on this one……
From a church in Blacklick, OH.  Apparently their belief is not to open your arms and welcome ‘all of God’s children’.  Although I hear if ‘they change their ways’ they’ll be accepted.

I wonder if they encourage beating your children there…or that parents should just go ahead and kill their kids if they swear at them.
Or if they believe in war that we should specifically kill women and babies.  The Bible specifically says to do these things.

Now before you get upset, I am a Christian.  And my point is that the Bible (which I DO have and have read by the way) was written like 1700 years ago.  Why do we take one thing LITERALLY  and not the rest?  The people in the Biblical days also practiced a lot of incest.  A LOT.  But we don’t go around sleeping with our family members now , do we?   We also don’t marry off our daughters to start their own family at age 12.  And we certainly don’t practice slavery any more.

Religion gives you your foundation.  Your common sense helps you to build on that foundation and makes you the person you are.
