Smoothies, pedicures and heavy metal.

I decided to hit the hay at 10.   One kid was at a sleepover,  one hanging out with her friends and the other at the mall with her friend Christina completing a list of things to do before summer vacation was over…..smoothies, pedicures….stuff like that.

After a very long day, I snuggled into bed and put the tv on.   As I started to settle in, the door opened slowly and a hesitant child stood on the other side and whispered:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Um……I wanted to tell you when dad wasn’t around,” she says with a shaky smile, “I did something today.”
“I got something pierced”

“Oh Lord, what? Where?”, as I lean over to turn on the lamp.

Now.  Granted she’s 20.   So I appreciate the fact that she still feels scared about telling me stuff like this.  I couldn’t help but think: ‘So you went out for smoothies, a pedicure and to impale yourself.  Yep, that’s a great day.   Nothing like having metal shoved into your abdominal cavity to cap off an otherwise uneventful summer.  Yup.

“Christina got one too.  She didn’t want me to tell you while she was here today incase you started yelling or wanted to call her mom or something” ((that made me laugh))

“Well, it’s your body.  Just make sure to keep it clean.  You don’t want to get an infection and have it fester into your abdominal wall causing you to like die or something”

“Are you mad?”

“No.  I’m not mad.   But call Christina and tell her I’m calling her mom.  Just for laughs!”
((I didn’t))
* If anyone out there has any tips on this piercing, I’d love to hear it.  I’d also love to hear what happens later in life when she’s pregnant….are there risks having a belly button piercing?   Please tell me your stories, I’d love to hear them!

  2. I can’t remember what they told me to do to keep it clean…it’s been a few years. Belly buttons take the longest to heal, but it really isn’t all that bad at all. I was able to sleep on my tummy. When your belly gets bigger with pregnancy, she will most likely need to remove it. But I know people who have taken it out and put it back after. I wasn’t pregnant when I had mine. I got mine at age 42 I think. It’s out now. It started bugging me, getting in the way of my jeans when I sat down. I liked it, but now I’m done with it. Although, I am thinking of getting my nose pierced and I definitely need another tattoo. Yup, just a couple things I bet you didn’t know about me. ;)

  3. I have my navel pierced and have since I was in high school. The best thing to clean it with is bactine (spelling?). Spray some on a q-tip, rub the top and bottom of the hole and slide the jewelry up and down so it doesn’t get stuck. When I was pregnant I went online and got an extra long (curved) plastic barbell. I had a c-section and was able to keep it in. Hope that helps! ;)

  4. I’ve only my ears pierced and all I know is to wear good metal in them.

So no advice, but I understand it can take 6-8 weeks to heal.

And funny, as always, the way you tell the story.

Does Shane know yet? And….. :)

  6. Well now that you brought this up…I can’t help but wonder why it’s called a belly button, I mean it doesn’t button anything. The innies are more of a belly hole and the outties are interesting but they don’t “button” anything either. Speaking of outties do they get pierced through the part that sticks out or do they somehow wriggle around and find like an edge to puncture?

Good point and gosh, I don’t know about outies, lol. But that is a very interesting question!

  7. My sister has one and she had no trouble when she got pregnant. I think she had to remove it, but it went back in after. I don’t think there are any greater risks than with any other piercing. She just has to keep it clean and be careful not to catch it on stuff.
