Aldi’s ~ My Likes and Dislikes

So a few months ago I started shopping at Aldi’s to cut some costs on our grocery budget.   After a few weeks I know what to buy and what not to buy, my likes and dislikes in comparison to name brand stuff.

This trip I stuffed 4 green eco-shopping bags and spent $37.00!   I calculated that if I bought similar stuff at the regular grocery store it would have been about $67.00

Of course I still do shop at the grocery store for meat, lunch meat and dog food ( I have not found a meat that I have actually LIKED at Aldi’s) …among a few other things…but now I buy all snacks, fruit, veggies and ice cream at Aldi’s.

I did buy deodorant at Aldi’s once but I smelled like a combo of Amish bread and hay.  Plus, every time I pulled the lid off it raised the stick….and every time I pushed it on my arm pit it went way down.  Way to much work.

The paper plates they sell here are better than any I’ve ever tried but the cleaning products are horrible, it’s like cleaning with tinted water.   So it’s a trial and error thing shopping here.

Their produce is always fresh and the snacks are incredibly priced.  The last couple weeks I’ve purchased a pound of strawberries for $1.29 and they are big and beautiful.  And snacks???? ….For instance…Frosty Delights (similar to Hostess Ding Dongs)…$1.99 for a pack of 12.   Now that’s a deal.  And they are actually very fresh and good!

Their chocolate bars?  I know my chocolate believe me.   I’d compare it to Ghirardelli’s.  I really would.  Very rich and creamy.  And 12 ice cream bars with chocolate coating for $1.99?  Outrageous!  lol.  Oh, and the chocolate chip cookies?  My kids prefer these to Nabisco!   Chips?  Good chips!  The sour cream/onion could use more flavor but for $1.29 a bag….who cares!.   They also sell a VERY comparable corn chip (to Frito’s) and nacho chip (to Dorito’s) at a third of the price (about .99 cents/bag).

(no, this is not a paid post, lol.  I just shop there and wanted to give my thoughts.)

We don’t have Aldi, but we have Winco. If you go there in the early morning, it’s okay, otherwise a million people.

  4. I love Aldi’s! I used to shop there all the time when I lived in Wisconsin. Unfortunately we don’t have Aldi’s out here in California. I sure miss shopping there!

  5. “Amish bread and hay” I love it! I’ve only been to Aldi once but I might go back just for those chocolate bars. Yumm!

That’s the thing with these kind of stores. You never know which products are winners and which ones suck big time. Trial and error like you say.

  6. i wish we had that type of store around here. even though i like to get stuff cheaper, there are definitely a few things that i have to buy brand name… like ketchup and t.p. :-)

  8. you should try Sav a lot. we got to both every week we even have a spread sheet to comapre the prices. so between the both of them we spend an average of 100 bucks a week for a family of 5.i only go to the the big GE store for very few items now.and then it is Wal-Mart for deodorant and toilet paper. Unemployment has really refined my smart shopping skills

  9. Wow, sounds like you got some bargains! Wish there was an Aldi closer to where I live!

  10. I have to Google and see if there’s one near here… Gimme a minute…

Did I ever mention I LOVE sour cream and onion chips. I love all kinds of chips in general!!

Oh, but back to that Google search…

Nope, I have to look no further than their map with all the little black dots for stores to have my heart broken. I’m sure they’ll work their way down here tho, eventually.

You rock on deals — and much else, Super Mom!

  11. You smelled like Amish bread and hay! Hahahahahaha!

We don’t have an Aldi anywhere close to us, but I would shop there in a heartbeat if we did. Our grocery bill is ridiculous. Sigh.

  13. I’m so squeemish to try new things. You’ve given me some really good things to try at Aldi’s. I do similar things with our grocery store brands, and some things are great, and some are crap…..trial and error.
