Remembering Kindergarten
filed in Just a rant on Sep.15, 2009
All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten is a wonderfully written book by Robert Fulghum. I read it about 20 years ago when it first came out.
Share everything
Play fair
Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don’t take things that aren’t yours.
Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
~ and so on…buy the book, it’s really good.
ANYHOOOOOOO…I started thinking about this book yesterday after all the moronic, stupid shit going on lately. You’ve got Kanye West standing up without being invited and speaking out of turn at the awards show….stealing the limelight from young Taylor Swift….You’ve got Serena Williams actin a fool at a tennis match. Such a refined lovely young lady beating her racquet into the ground and threatening to shove a ball up someone’s ass. Wait, I mean effing ass. Ladylike.
You’ve got Joe Wilson shouting out during a speech, “you lie…boy“ to the President on national t.v. It’s bad enough that he made himself look stupid, but the ….”boy” made him look….oh…a bit racist ? YA THINK? This is a man who is representing an entire State for God’s sake. And by the way…what year is this anyhow? 1960?
(*and yes, he did use ‘boy’ according to those sitting directly around him)Correction: As pointed out by my bloggy friend Cara (landofbean.blogspot) this reporter who ‘heard’ it now states it was implied. Hmmmm….implied? How sad for that and how sad that that has become conversation amongst some, including me. Article here. I cannot keep the ‘boy’ in this post if it is implied. So it’s out. But I still don’t like what Wilson said…implied or otherwise. But if it didn’t actually come out of his mouth in concise words, I’m certainly not going to perpetuate it here. That would make me no different then who I’m bitching about.
You’ve got people who have taken town hall meetings to whole new levels. Not just Republicans….I’m really not just talking about Republicans. Many people hated Bush also and showed it in ways that were pretty off color. Like when he left the White House for good and people starting singing…..Na Na Na Na…Hey Hey Hey…Good…BYE! Now I’ll be the first to say that I didn’t like him (at all) but to act like a butt isn’t the way to go. I don’t even think a child would have done that.
I wonder what has happened to this world in the last decade. Doesn’t it seem to have gone real bad…real fast? What has become of people that they spread false information knowingly about another? I cannot even tell you how many emails I get in a week that are so bizarre….and all it takes is one little check on snopes.com for anyone to see the truth….but yet the emails continue to be forwarded. It’s just bizarre! There is no honesty and integrity anymore. People just let the shit spew out of their mouth and well, they just don’t care. I know MY mom used to say, “Think before you speak”. (and I’m pretty sure that goes for anything written as well)
But I’ll tell you what, if I was sitting near Kanye, Serena OR Wilson I would have smacked each one of them HARD upside their head. With a copy of Fulghum’s book. Seems to me, that what we learned as kids has gone far out of our memories. And so, I’ll end this little rant with another quote from the book:
And it is still true, no matter how old you are – when you go out into the world,
it is best to hold hands and stick together.

Amen! I have been so embarrassed and disheartened by people lately. Especially the ones you mentioned. We need a return to civility.

Are you telling me I could have been done with school after Kindergarten. Why didn’t someone tell me sooner?
I love that list, because it is SO true. I might have to check that book out.

Great points! I agree with you. More people need to learn how to think before they speak.

Beyonce reminded everyone of what a decent person is like! I was so proud of her for turning that moment into a moment of grace.
PS: You gonna love my post today, mama Sheila!

I feel so out of the loop I missed all of these moments (minus the outburst toward the President). You are so right. Some people have really forgotten those fundamental ideals.
I love Fulghum’s book.

Totally agree on all counts. While Wilson’s behavior was deplorable, I have to disagree that he did NOT say “boy.” Journalists looking to make it a race issue, have said the “boy” was implied, but it was not actually said. I know, crazy talk, right? The media trying to make drama. Pshaw.

If the case is that it was ‘implied’ rather than said…then those reporters should come out and state that publically rather than let the issue fester. That makes me upset because if it were implied…it’s just fueling the fire. Thanks for the info, that’s good to know.
Pshaw is right! Frickin drama!

I’m with you 100% on this one Sheila! Let me add I can’t believe that in the USA you now have people opting out of a speech to children ages 5-18 on the value of working hard and staying in school by the President of these United States. It was amazing to me how much hoopla this one got. I was going to blog on it, and I still might, but it really riled me up.

At least I haven’t said anything too stupid lately. Not that I remember, anyway. The times I’ve felt like speaking out tho and have not, I do feel very very good for holding my tongue, may be hard to do but it generally keeps me out of trouble.

It’s just so disturbing to me to see how human beings treat other human beings these days. Everyone makes a huge deal about political correctness, but yet we treat each other with less respect than ever.
