Works for Me Wednesday – Mom solves healthcare issue.

I’m sure most of us can agree that something needs to be done in this country about healthcare.   Now, I’m ‘just a mom’…I don’t get paid to make decisions, I just make them.  SO! Toss out the 1000 pages…..Here’s my 1/2 page plan.

I call it Sheila’s Happy Half Page Healthcare Bill  or  SHHH 1

*If you already have health insurance coverage…at the end of the year like when you do your taxes, you’ll fill out a form to show that you in fact paid for coverage…and the government will send you a rebate check for $5000 for family coverage or $1800 for single coverage to help reimburse that coverage….but only up to the amount you paid, not over the amount.  For example:  If a family pays $4800 a year for medical, the reimbursement is limited to $4800.

This relieves all of us financially that DO pay for coverage, and enables those who DON’T have coverage and want it, to get it.    And if you don’t participate, then your medical bills are your own problem.

*Pharmaceutical companies in the US cannot sell the pills for $40 a pill to Americans, and turn around and sell the same pill to Canadians for $4.    This is not permitted.

*All insurance policies will be required to provide you and everyone in your family ONE free physical per year including lab work.  Not subject to deductible or co-pay.

*No policy will be allowed by an way shape or form to have pre-existing conditions.   If you change jobs, you can take your policy with you without a premium increase (like the horrible COBRA plan does).   The policy price will remain the same.  The former employee has the option of paying the full premium until they find another job, in which case their new employer may pick up a portion of it.    (in other words, you own your policy, it’s not through your company, although your company can choose to pay a portion of your policy expense, and would receive a tax credit if they do.  All policies available through companies NOW…..will be personal policies and the same benefits remain in effect.)

*Tort reform.  Let’s stop letting everyone sue everyone for stupid stuff.   You know what stupid stuff is.

*Caps.  Insurance companies will be required to keep their quoted premium price for 3 years.  They can’t lure you in and raise your monthly bill after 6 months or a year.  3 years.  And when it does get raised, there’s a cap on that.  Depending maybe on how much you’ve used it personally…like if you haven’t used the benefits at all…they can’t raise your premium.  If you’ve gone and had a heart attack, they can raise it a maximum of 10%.

AND HERE’S A SMART IDEA:

*Communities, businesses or organizations foot the bill to send a doctor or two (or a few) to medical school.  In return, when the doctor graduates, he/she will work for free for a couple days a week for the community/business/organization for a specified period of years.   There will be a ‘clinic’ in the city/business/organization where people in that group can come and receive free exams for simple things like strep cultures, ear aches, sore throats, coughs, etc.  (Maybe like a $5 co-pay to cover things like gloves, cotton balls, etc.

This would also work with nurses!

If you like my bill (SHHH 1 – tell our President HERE by sending this post or a link to it.)

See?  Now wasn’t that simple?  Healthcare crisis solved by a mere mom who blogs.  Next week?  Watch how I solve the immigration problem.

  1. I love your smart idea about med school being paid for by communities then docs working in the community,

So smart Sheila! Now if politicians only listened to us moms instead of the insurance companies…

  2. You’ve got a lot of interesting ideas. And the plus side, it’s not 1000 pages. Although I’m pretty sure some people would need more details on what qualifies as “stupid stuff”. ;)
