Okay, so funny thing happened last night….
Shane and I went to an academic banquet at the High School in which my son was one of the award recipients for being part of the top 10% of his class. (He was #5 in case you are wondering). Anyhooooo….Keep in mind this is a Catholic School, so many of the speeches had religious overtones, undertones and inbetween tones.
The main speaker, a former student and now teacher at a local University and very dedicated to her faith, stood up to speak…..
“I was going to write a speech but I decided to let God speak through me. As He always does, He will guide me.”
Then it came. A very longgggg awkward silence. A long pregnant pause. Complete silence. You could almost hear the sound of crickets chirping like on a quiet summer night.
“Uh….Ah…Um…”, she says
I looked over at Shane, the jokester by nature. I needed to make eye contact with him before he blurted out something to “break the ice”….”ease her pain”. Our eyes met, I gave him that eye that says “Don’t you dare”. And luckily he didn’t. I thought he’d yell something out like “Oh, this is AWK-ward“…or…”Uh-oh…I think God left ya hangin. ”
Meanwhile, with crickets still chirping, the speaker began to fumble a bit. And found the place in the speech which she DID write down…sputtered a bit…and continued. Shane compared it to that Jim Carey movie Bruce Almighty…the scene when he’s a news anchor, and God garbles his words every time Jim began to speak….and we laughed the entire way home.

Wow, #5? That’s awesome! Congrats to your son!
Oh no! Awkward is an understatement, especially after that intro. Is it bad that I laughed out loud at “God left you hanging.” I’m only an occasional heathen I swear.
And congrats on top ten! Whoo hoo.

Great job by your son being #5!! I would have had a VERY hard time not laughing when that girl didn’t say anything. Btw, I love that scene in Bruce Almighty!

How funny and definitely awkward, that would be like my worst fear coming to life, ugh I hate public speaking. Congrats on your son 5th in his class is something to be very proud of!
Don’t you really wonder when people say, I left it all up to God? I do, I mean I believe in the power of prayer and I do believe God has plan, but for me to sit idly by seems odd, kwim? Leaving it up to go does not be pro-active, at least to me it just means working hard, doing your best and having faith.
Congrats to your son on being top 10%, # 5 is awesome.

That poor lady. But I don’t blame you for finding it funny. Congratulations to your son on his academic honors. That is quite an achievement.
God’s pretty busy. Also most helpful to those who at least attempt to help themselves. My Grandaddy would have reminded her of the 7 P’s: Proper Prior Planning Prevents P#@$ Poor Performance. (Not a religious guy)
The THIRD ROCKS!
