Being a mom is a “fun activity”!

Amor Vincit Omnia

Sounds beautiful, doesn’t it?

The phrase Love Conquers All (Latin: Omnia vincit Amor, also written amor vincit omnia ) originally appeared in Eclogue X of the Eclogues, a series of poems by Virgil (70 BC – 19 BC).

Also, the English translation of the Latin Amor Vincit Omnia, a painting by the Baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

Oooooo, that sounds b-e-a-utiful doesn’t it?  All romantic-like, conjuring images of days of old, ancient poets and amazing painters of yesteryear!

Yes, yes it is beautiful.  But, now it’s also beautiful on my 18 year old’s body.  Yes.  Oh, Eighteen is a wonderful age!  It’s that age when they still ‘sorta’ need you…yet they are SOOOO legally able to make their own decisions in life.

They can sign up for the military, they can go to college, they can legally marry.  And yes, they can legally go out with their friends in the middle of a Sunday afternoon and come home in the evening with words permanently written on their bodies.

Ahhh, motherhood.  I remember those days of coloring on the walls, magic marker all over the hands and face…..the kind that washed off.

The crying whenever she got a boo-boo or even a little pinch.  It was horrible and the world was about to end.  Oh, the agony of a tiny cut.  “Mommy…I need a band-aid, hurry!”

But now, 18 years later, she can sit patiently while a stranger brands her for life with a bazillion little needle pricks and not even bat an eye.

Actually, it is a very well done tattoo.  It’s crisp, clear and it is a pretty phrase.  And afterwards we had a long talk about how she came to the decision of where to place this new found life long phrase.

She decided she didn’t want it on her arm, not a tramp stamp, not on her back or shoulder (because she wants a wedding photo with an ‘over the shoulder shot’ and can’t have a tattoo in the way. ~ btw, there’s no wedding plans….this is just ‘pre-planning’ for the distant future ~ or so I am assured)

Her thought was putting it here would be optimal for bathing suit wearing, and still being able to hide it when she has too…like…you know,  for her career.  And she’s decided she’s done in the ‘tattoo department’.

Okay so now I’m going to go back to my room.  You know…the one with all the pretty padding on the walls.   I think I get special “candy” every few hours…candy that makes me woozy and makes the world seem all bright and sunny.   I think I’m getting jello for lunch.  They won’t let me use knives and forks here.   hmmmm.   Reminds me of an old saying:  Amor Vincit Omnia!

Luv ya Kaylee!  Tattoos and all babe!

  1. I have no idea how I’ll react if this happens with my girls. All I pray is that they are at least 18, it’s in a decent spot & a tackful work of art!

  3. Thank goodness she put it in a place that can be hidden! Seriously, can you imagine if she came home with it on her bicep?!

Here’s another thought to freak you out. I was only a year older than her when I married and only 2 years older when I got pregnant. AHHH! Ok, sorry, that was mean to do that to you while you’re still trying to get over the tattoo!

  4. Speaking of pregnant, that tattoo is going to look FABULOUS when it’s stretched. Trust me I know,

I was lucky because mine didn’t end up damaged, but I have to admit I’ve seen some get hit with stretch marks that destroyed it.

Wait… this comment is NOT very supportive is it? I’m sorry!! From what I see it IS a beautiful tattoo and for the record, my husband and I are COVERED in tattoos so I’m certainly not anti-tattoo in the least.

I got my first at 18 at my Mom almost fainted when she found out! I think you are handling Kaylee’s WAY better than my mom handled mine.

  5. Well, she does have a pretty good point about the practicality of where it was to go. And if she changes her mind down the road she can always wear a one-piece bathign suit. Or get it removed by lazer, those work pretty well.

As usual, a heart-warming piece written with your special wit and charm.

And hey, send a little of that “rubber room candy” this way, will ya?

    P.S. She is totally cute!

    You’re such a good mom.

My mom would have killed me.

  10. I thought you were the one who had that tattoo in your more recent post! First thing that came to my mind when I saw the picture and the location of the tattoo? Pregnancy and stretch marks! But since someone has commented that it won’t look that bad, then I guess it’s ok?

BTW, your teenager is pretty level headed, with the planning and all. No drastic decisions for her huh?

  11. Ooh yes, our 18 year olds and their tattoos. My son also got his tongue pierced last week. Oy vey! I told him he’s done with the rebelling for now. LOL

Your daughter seems very level headed and at least she thought that one through. My son did the same, he at least put his where it’s covered by short sleeves so it won’t affect future employment….
