10 Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes

Yeah, so. I swear to God I’m really NOT a bad mom. But yes, yes I took my son snowboarding when it was 14 degrees outside. I would wait dutifully in the bar. I had visions of a quiet lofty rustic bar with a grand fireplace. The sweet smell of pine and Christmas garland dressing up the place. Me sipping a glass of wine. I brought a new book to read. Life would be grand (while my son froze his ass off outside.)

Yeah, didn’t work out that way so much. The bar was a cross between the corner bar in any old neighborhood and a really old cabin. I was quickly reminded of WHY I don’t like camping….from the mildewy stink inside. ICK. But, I’m a trooper. I ordered a glass of white zinfandel. I’m glad I didn’t get a yellow wine, because it was served in a small plastic cup that resembled a urine specimen container. $4.75

So of course after the wine, I need a smoke. And, of course, in Ohio smokers have been banished to the depths of hell (outside in the now 10 degree temps). So I didn’t smoke much. Two cups of hot chocolate went by and I got some reading in…..in the cafeteria where the smell was of french fries! lol

Alan & his friend are in this pic somewhere. (?)     Last pic before batteries died.  Too cold.maviefolle-331
So, I got some brand new batteries, put them in…..got ONE pic out of them before their sudden death due to the cold weather!  Arghhhhh!

I cannot believe the kids lasted 3 1/2 hours in these temps.  I can’t believe they came home with the same amount of toes and fingers they went with.  When we left, it was 3 degrees with a wind chill of minus 15  (brrrrrrrr)

  1. I’m glad they came home with all their appendages attached! Sorry your end of the deal wasn’t so fun. That’s some pretty cold temps!

We went from high 60′s, low 70′s weather, just two days ago, to not even making it to 40 today! Tomorrow it’s suppose to be in the low 30′s. Then slowly climb back up to 65 by Friday… isn’t that crazy?? Sheesh!

  2. Before we lived here, we lived in up, up, upstate NY- just south of Canada upstate NY. Growing up in Upstate NY has given me a nice perspective. It’s currently 15 degrees outside here… but I can remember living there and it was -30 for a week straight. Plus windchill. Vacation in the Adirondacks in January and you’ll be grateful for those positive double digit temps.!!

Glad everyone returned with all their body parts.

  4. Sorry things didn’t work out quite as planned. I can’t believe they stayed out so long in those temps! I did the same once, and ended up with frostbitten ears (miserable)!

  5. It was eleven here on Saturday, oh my goodness, hot dogs and fries sound great, I think I have some fries in the freezer I can get out to make with the hot dogs, thanks for the idea.

  6. I remember Ski Club in highschool. We were out in MUCH colder weather, so no need to feel bad at all!

Heck my 2 year old and 5 year old were out this weekend in the back yard, playing in the snow, and it was only 5 degrees out at the time.

Cold is good for ya! Just ask those crazy guys that do the polar plunge every year.

  7. It was 10 here with the wind chill factored in. Glad they came back with all their digits. Kids are hard core.

  8. We went skiing in Colorado a couple of times a year all throughout my childhood and it wasn’t until I was maybe 16 or so that I suddenly became aware of the cold. I swear there was a climatological shift or something because before that I could stay out all day and be fine. Now, I last about an hour. Good thing we always stay in a ski-in house.

PS – That whole smoking business drives me nutty. I quit a couple of years ago, but I’m still a smoker at heart.

It may have been super-cold but dang it looks gorgeous, love the night shot.

Now I got me the skiiing fever. I’ve only been 3 times in my life but I caught the magic of it on the 3rd time.

  10. Wow, that is a LONG time to be out there! I walk my dog for 10 minutes outside in the snow, and I my face and toes no longer feel attached.

  11. OMG people go outdoors in those kinds of temperatures? lol. I’m from Miami, I can’t even comprehend those numbers. I suppose if they were out there for three hours they weren’t really complaining. I didn’t even know batteries could die from frostbite. Wow. Too cold for my tropical blood, fer sher.

  12. That’s being a fun mom, not a bad mom. The one and only time I took my daughter skiing (we live in the south) I pictured those wood-lined rooms for me by the huge fire and big padded furniture. It was like a cafeteria. So disappointing.
