Why cemeteries are interesting

So we went to practice driving at the cemetery.
This is why I luuuuv cemeteries!   Do you think this person was, ummmm, perhaps…. a fashion designer?

Other interesting stones…..
I found this one interesting because it’s the first time I’ve seen ‘canadian soldier’ on a monument in the US.  I think that’s very cool.

MC liked this one “Her Man”.  Notice the chains under HIS name?  And her graphic looks like a big smile, but it has stars in it.  I’m not sure what these may actually stand for.

How sweet, she clears the graves as we walk.
And look at this….I felt sorry for this persons sunken stone!
And here’s the Freemason section, which I always find very mysterious.  (Secret society type stuff)

Below two pics:  1. Large Freemason monument     2. Unknown mason symbol

Left pic:  Freemason stone.  This guy was a member of the 32nd degree, which I believe is the second highest degree.

And last, but not least, close to the property lines of the houses…I’ve heard many stories of how these old, once dirt floor garages, when excavated turned up a few headstones, indicating the cemetery boundaries may have been farther out than previously thought.

  1. When I went to camp as a kid, we always went to a nearby cemetery and did grave rubbings. Every year, the kids would make a beeline for the famous (or infamous) Dick Rash. No lie.

  2. i love the A HOLL. do u think they realized that? i think i would have opted to spell out my first name…but then again, you pay per letter :) maybe the deceased wasn’t responsible and the one who was…let their true feeling out by getting the FINAL word :)

  3. I’m so glad someone caught that! Everytime we leave that cemetery, we always pass that marker and say “See ya later…A hole”. (and then go home and watch an Austin Powers movie) lol.
I bet it was someone getting the ‘final word’ lol

  4. too funny! i’d visit that cemetery anytime i was looking for a mental “goose”. A HOLL would make all things right in the world :)

  5. I’ve never thought to take pictures of funny names at a cemetery. I need to go do that! Such a cool idea.
